I think more of the motivation for this article comes from the lack of English that some of the TA's can speak. It's great that people from other countries and cultures come and learn here. It gives us some diversity. But I believe that in order to become a TA, they should be able to speak fluent and clear English. It can be very frustrating when the TA can't answer your questions about something because they can't understand you and even more hard to sit and listen to a lecture form a TA that cannot speak English well.

I don't think you understand how hard it is to come to the U.S and study in a completely different language. Imagine learning Finance or MGMT in Chinese or French. You should be more sympathetic towards these people instead of bashing against them on your blog. They're putting a lot of effort in to teach kids like you, so you should put a little more effort in to understand them. It's not THAT hard. And you made it pretty clear that you're smart just because you're in Carlson right?

I agree with what you are saying. I think it creates borders in classrooms. I have had plenty of TA's that have been horrible at English. I am all for more culture and everything, but when it gets in the way of my learning and my ability to get help in class, then it really angers me. What really gets to me sometimes is when they are able to help other foreign students more than me because both of their first languages are the same. There should at least be a English test they need to pass that isn't easy and makes sure they are capable of interacting and talking clearly with the students they are teaching. My Calc TA couldn't even understand our questions when we asked them.....he would just point at the board.

About all of the TA's that cant speak english....It's because of a program that the U of M is apart of. They bring foreign students from other countries as a way to introduce more "culture" in us as students. Basically, any one can can apply and come to the U.S. for scholarly means for 1yr. After the year they go back and apparently it makes them look very well in their homeland. I know this because I asked an American TA last year the same exact question you did haha. I think the program is worthless and should be cut.
